  • Each lesson provides further knowledge about choices for paint, how to use different brushes, the importance of watercolour paper, and a few additional materials that can be combined with watercolour.

  • The basics of colour theory will be taught explicitly early in the course, with further instruction throughout. You will learn how to mix colour without it getting muddy, and how to combine colours beautifully.

  • You will explore how to control and manipulate watercolour paint: from creating smooth washes to successfully painting depth and detail, this course will support you to handle this unpredictable medium with confidence.

I’m Alaina (pronounced Al-ay-na), an experienced watercolourist and trained teacher.

My own watercolour art has evolved from classic botanicals and purist style to a more innovative style that incorporates the beauty and unpredictability of the paint, striking a balance between abstraction and realism.

I believe in the artist inside every person, and aim to build an environment that encourages creativity and exploration. The warm and nurturing atmosphere of my studio supports all participants whatever their ability or experience, and empowers everyone to explore with confidence.

Course FAQ

  • My studio is in Northway, near Tewkesbury, a short distance from J9 of the M5. There is a bus stop at the end of the road that is covered by the 41 and 71 services. Ashchurch-for-Tewkesbury train station is about ten minutes walk.

    Full details of my address will be sent on purchase.

  • Currently there is no online only option for this course. However, watch this space as I hope to provide this soon!

  • There are two options to spread the cost of this course. You can choose the single payment option, and pay through PayPal who offer an option to spread the cost.

    Alternatively, you can choose to pay in four monthly payments. The first of these will be taken on the date you sign up, the other following each month. So, if you sign up on November 29th 2025, payments will be taken November 29th, December 29th, January 29th, and February 28th.

  • If you miss a lesson you will still gain access to online videos and PDF files for that session. I will also provide print-outs of the PDFs at the next session you attend, and briefly run through any important information with you. I cannot provide catch-up sessions or refunds for missed lessons.

  • Up until 17th January 2026, one week before the start of the course: let me know that you cannot attend, and I will issue a full refund. Any help you can offer to help me fill your space will be much appreciated. You will also lose access to the online portion of the course.

    Once the course has begun (after 24th January 2026) I will be unable to offer a refund for cancellations. However, you will retain access to the online portion of the course.

  • All materials for in-studio sessions are provided.

    However, if you wish to keep practising at home, you will need a few supplies. Find a checklist in the online overview, or purchase a starter kit from me to get you going.

    If you wish to shop for your own materials, more in-depth information about what you need to look for can be provided on purchase of the course. Just pop me an email, and I will be happy to help.
